Mosque Crawler: Undercover operatives who hang out in Mosques trying to gather intelligence about the community and the members. This is an extremely low level intelligence gathering method, which proved very ineffective for the CIA post 9/11, but the NYPD adopted it for their own secret spying program.

Heard this in an interview with Matt Apuzzo on Fresh Air. Apuzzo along with 4 other AP reporters won a Pulitzer for a series of investigative articles about the NYPD’s secret spying program that monitored daily life in Muslim communities.
